Workshop designed to explore the interplay between space and form in the architectural and sculptural practices of renowned figures and Llotja alumni such as Jaume Plensa, Antoni Gaudí, and Joan Miró.
The tentative plan is to use rattan to develop a variety of spatial proposals.

These sessions will offer a unique opportunity to investigate artistic and architectural spatial link. Participants will have the chance to analyze significant sites, including the Jaume Plensa workshop, Park Güell and the Fundació Mas Miró, facilitating an appreciation for the contextual influences on spatial design.

Each student will be encouraged to develop a unique proposal reflecting their interpretation of spatial dynamics, which will culminate in an exhibition at «La Comella Forest» in Tarragona. This exhibition will showcase the students’ works, providing a platform for critical engagement and public presentation. The workshop is scheduled to take place at Campus Llotja Sant Andreu.

PROGRAM

ACTIVITY

Teaching-Learning Activity: Design and Artistic Inspiration with Rattan
Duration: 3 class periods (3 hour per period)
Skills: Creativity, Collaboration, Research, Presentation, Art History Knowledge
Materials Needed:

  • Rattan material or equivalent
  • Drawing tools (pencils, markers, etc.)
  • Camera or smartphone for process documentation
  • Access to a computer for research and dossier creation
  • Internet access (for research purposes)

Activity Overview:

Students will work in interdisciplinary teams of four members. Each group will choose one of the following artists: Antoni Gaudí, Joan Miró, Jaume Plensa, or Mies Van der Rohe. Based on the selected artist, they will design two rattan pieces (such as furniture or decorative objects) inspired by the artist’s style.

Instructions:

Step 1: Research and Artist Selection (Individual or Group Work)

  • Choose one of the following artists to base your design on:
    • Antoni Gaudí (Known for his organic, flowing forms and his integration of nature into architecture)
    • Joan Miró (Known for his abstract, colorful works that often incorporate playful, surreal shapes)
    • Jaume Plensa (Known for large-scale sculptures, particularly those incorporating text and the human figure)
    • Mies Van der Rohe (Known for his minimalist, modernist architecture and clean lines)
  • As a group, research the selected artist to understand their style, techniques, and iconic works. Write a short description of the artist’s style, including visual elements such as shapes, materials, and color schemes. Discuss how these elements could inspire a rattan design.

Step 2: Brainstorming and Concept Design (Group Work)

  • Together, discuss and propose ideas for two rattan pieces. Consider functionality, aesthetics, and the chosen artist’s influence.
  • Create rough sketches of your designs. The sketches should reflect the key elements of the artist’s style, such as:
    • Gaudí: Organic, nature-inspired forms
    • Miró: Abstract, playful shapes and bright colors
    • Plensa: Human figure or text incorporation in sculptures
    • Mies Van der Rohe: Minimalist lines and geometric shapes
  • Decide on the dimensions, functionality, and possible uses for your rattan pieces.

Step 3: Creating the Dossier (Individual and Group Work)

  • Each group will create a dossier containing the following elements:
    • Artist Overview: Brief summary of the chosen artist and their style (including visuals where relevant).
    • Sketches: Hand-drawn or digitally created sketches of the proposed rattan pieces.
    • Process Photographs: Document the design and creation process with photos. Include stages like brainstorming, sketching, prototyping, and any changes made to the original design.
    • Space Context: Explain where your pieces could be placed in real-life settings, such as a garden, living room, museum, or public space. Discuss the environment and how your design complements it.

Step 4: Presentation and Submission

Step 5: Final Evaluation

  • The work will be evaluated based on creativity, how well the designs align with the chosen artist’s style, collaboration, dossier documentation, and the final presentation.
  • Certificates will be awarded to groups whose work demonstrates the most originality, effort, and connection to the artist’s vision.

ENTRE EL COR I EL CEL – CRU

Between the heart and the sky – Raw

I had a wave of ink, at the bottom of a drawer,
A letter from a certain Susanna, which I never opened,
A ship in a jar, that sank one May afternoon,
A raw tear, ready to roll.

I had a movie ticket, with no one by my side,
The silence of a dawn, sitting at a doorstep,
I had Frida’s gaze, a kiss lost among the glasses in a bar,
A smile lost in the middle of an ocean.

And a little secret between my heart and the sky,
Where I lost everything for a kiss.
I had a postcard, a demon, an insomnia, a camel,
The life of someone else, sweetening my coffee,
A star that no longer shone, hidden behind a winter afternoon,
All my things wrapped in a remorse.

And a little secret between my heart and the sky,
Where I lost everything for a kiss.

T’ESCRIC -ZOÒTROP

I write you

I write to you about days and nights,
From the empty left side of the bed,
I write to you about clouds wounded by death,
About witches dressed in mourning.
I write to you from April until March,
About a July day to forget,
I write to you from Wednesday to Tuesday,
About your mother’s eyes crying.

I write to you about the waltz of an August 16th,
About you without me, about me without you.
I write to you while I invent words when I can’t sleep,
I write to you hating the 16th of February,
With no prosthetics for my heart, in every tear your name.
And I tell you that when I wake up, get up,
I don’t know where I am.

I write to you starting from the end,
In a corner of the task, having dinner,
I write to you about Pablo jumping across rooftops,
About a Frida painting, crying.
I write to you with the words I’ve found
In the stories I never told you,
I write to you that there’s no day I don’t miss you,
And that I search for the way to return.

COR NU D’ELLA – SALVAR L’ÀNIMA

Her nude heart – Save the soul

On either side, plane trees
Welcome us with open arms.
On the left, a charming café
Turns winter back.

The scent of fresh firewood rises,
The laughter of grenache wine,
And secrets of an old farmer.
The remnants of a misty sky,
Sausages on the tables,
And who knows, perhaps another time.

We’ll wait, like every evening,
For summer to return once more,
And the glasses will become letters,
And the letters, nests.

Of early words,
Of coolness beneath mulberry trees,
And stars over a reservoir.
Of kisses that cannot be explained
If hidden in caresses
That have found another time.

May it take us to the shore
Of simple things,
To the paths between the vines,
To the edges of ancient stones.
May it lead us to the hands
That caress life,
And bring us closer to the love
Of Cor nu d’ella.

LA RAMBLA DEL COR – ZOÒTROP
The ramble of the heart

Lights of color, air, sounds,
Eyes behind eyes, priests, sinners,
Ice actresses, mannequins without names,
There’s another place, it’s the Rambla of the heart.
Winter rain, garden gnomes,
Cardboard flowers, a bride on the balcony,
Waiters talking with words inside a glass,
There’s another place, it’s the Rambla of the heart.

It never moves, always there, trodden
By mortals, immortals, elves and fairies.
I only, only can remember it,
I lost my heart there, I’ve lost the Rambla.
Lost dreams, resting on the benches,
Alive and forgotten, holding hands,
AIDS in the smoke, Maria crying,
There’s another place, it’s the Rambla of the heart.

It never moves, always there, trodden
By mortals, immortals, elves and fairies.
I only, only can remember it,
I lost my heart there, I’ve lost the Rambla.
